France has launched a robust bombing campaign in Syria in response to the Daesh (ISIS) coordinated attacks in Paris this weekend, sending fighter jets into the militant group's Raqqa headquarter Sunday night.
French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told reporters during the G-20 summit in Antalya the French response was to be expected given what unfolded Friday night in the French capital.
"That's what we did with the strikes on Raqqa, which is their headquarter," he said. "We cannot let [Isis] act without reacting."
But as the fleet of 12 warplanes targeted a command center, munitions depot and training camp belonging to the militant group but social media users pointed out it probably wasn't Daesh who'd end up paying the highest price.
Some social media users are noting how, while in response to a terrible event overseas, more airstrikes in Syria ultimately mean even more suffering for the civilians left inside the country.
Tweeting under the hashtag #PrayforSyria, users commented on the lack of media and public attention for other crises around the world and questioned whether extreme violence in France was reason to respond with ramped-up violence in a place dense not only with Daesh militants—but also with innocent civilians.
