What’s it like fasting in a non-Muslim office?

The Huffington Post’s Linda Sarsour says “life becomes a literal hunger game” in a video detailing the life of a Muslim in a non-Muslim office during Ramadan-the Islamic holy month which requires adherents to remain from eating or drinking during the day. Some Muslims choose not to, but Sarsour is correct that this is the reality for millions of Muslims in the West.

“Hey, I hear you’re fasting. That means you can’t eat, right?” the American Sarsour claims to often here. She further notes that “awkward” office birthday parties become even more so, and also says that some Muslims actually gain weight due to the “midnight binge eating,” to the dismay of non-Muslims.

On the contrary, non-fasting Western workers in the Arab world often make efforts to not eat in front of their fasting colleagues during the month.

Sarsour ends the video by threatening to ask silly questions to her coworkers on the holidays for their faiths. To a Jewish colleague she invites to a party on Saturday-the Jewish sabbath which forbids driving in some sects-she says “But what if you drove there, and then you drove home in reverse. Would they cancel each other out?”
