Between the actual battle raging on the ground and the ideological one unfolding online, Turkey's wars are getting confusing.
In addition to the bombing raids on Dash (ISIS) targets in Syria earlier this week, Turkish air raids in northern Iraq intensified. By Thursday, officials reported nearly 200 militants from the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) had been killed thus far. Meanwhile, the Peoples Protection Units, (YPG) another Kurdish group fighting Daesh in Syria, claimed Turkish forces staged a cross-border attack on their positions. The UN urged restraint. Syrian rebel groups chimed in, then Syriac-Assyrian Christians.
All in all, the situation is making for a uneasy but so far unchanged stance from NATO, which is to back Turkish actions as a move to defend its borders. In all the chaos (and three-letter Kurdish acronyms) its easy to get mixed up. But now that the world's focusing in on this saga, it's getting more embarrassing not to know.
