Oman Oil Marketing Company (omanoil) joined Earth Hour 2011, the largest voluntary action ever witnessed which unites more than 128 countries, 4616 cities and towns and 1.3 billion people around the world to raise awareness on the importance of environment preservation and reducing energy consumption.

All non essential electrical appliances were switched off at omanoil’s head office in Mina Al Fahal in addition to the Qurum Filling Station and ahlain convenience store, managed and operated by Enhance LLC, which were decorated with candle-lit lanterns. During the hour of 8.30pm and 9.30pm, management members and volunteers from the Company’s Corporate and HSSE teams welcomed customers with traditional Omani dates and coffee while explaining the importance of this global sustainability movement.

Eng. Fasial Al Shanfari, General Manager Operations, Engineering and HSSE at omanoil expressed, “Earth Hour is a prime example of the power of change and how one person can make a difference. It empowers people to work together to create a better future for our planet and generations to come.”

He added, “In line with this year’s theme, we are committed to going beyond the hour and ensuring that our responsible actions and teachings from this movement to combat climate change are practiced throughout our daily operations by first motivating behavioral change from within the organization.”

From the onset, omanoil has placed environment protection and preservation at the forefront of its agenda by constantly improving design standards, promoting proactive measures, eco-conscious thinking and a green corporate culture in addition to adopting best international practices.

For more than a decade, omanoil has been recognized as a pioneer in HSSE within the oil and gas sector by implementing a number of “green” measures. All road tankers are made of aluminum rather than steel to minimize carbon emissions and reduce fuel consumption. Recycling boxes are available in all offices and specialized recycling systems are installed at 14 car wash facilities across the Sultanate. The Company has also recently improved construction specifications for forecourt flooring to include concrete hard stands around pump islands and is considered a leader in introducing non-metallic double skin pipes and double skin retail underground tanks with leak detection system in all filling stations as a preventative measure against pollution.
