ALBAWABA - Almonds are healthy nuts that come with a bundle of benefits for your body. They are a great source of protein, fiber, healthy fats, and vitamin E. These nutritional values make almonds a great snack and a healthy addition to your diet.

However, just like with most things, eating too many almonds can have some negative side effects that may not be beneficial to your health.

Side effects of eating too many almonds

1. Weight gain

One of the significant side effects of consuming too many almonds is weight gain. Almonds are rich in calories, and consuming an excessive amount on a daily basis can result in weight gain, especially if you are not engaged in any physical activity that assists in burning those calories.

2. Oxidative stress

Surprisingly, some research suggests that eating too many almonds in a setting could lead to higher levels of oxidative stress in the body.

Despite the high levels of antioxidants in almonds, consuming them excessively may result in an increase of free radicals in the body, which can cause cellular damage, inflammation, aging, and diseases such as cancer.

3. Risk of kidney stones

Consuming high amounts of almonds may increase the risk of developing kidney stones. These stones form when high levels of calcium oxalate accumulate in the body and are not excreted. Almonds contain high levels of oxalate, which is better absorbed than any other food source.

4. Digestive problems

Consuming too many almonds can also cause digestive problems if consumed in excess. This is due to their high fiber content, which can cause bloating, gas, and other digestive issues when eaten beyond moderation.

To avoid such problems, it is important to restrict your consumption to a few almonds per day, especially if you have a history of digestive issues.

5. Vitamin E overdose

Lastly, consuming 100 grams or half a cup of almonds offers 25 mg of vitamin E, which is more than the daily recommended intake of 15 mg. Eating other vitamin E-rich foods like spinach; whole grains; and eggs can worsen the situation, leading to symptoms such as diarrhea, weakness, and blurred vision.

While almonds are undoubtedly a nutritious snack, it is essential not to consume too many almonds at once, but instead in moderation to avoid any negative side effects. As they say, balance is key.
