ALBAWABA - Video games have become a popular form of entertainment, but recent studies suggest that hours of gaming may put players at risk of developing hearing problems.

Loud sounds emitted by video games can lead to fatigue and stress on the sensory cells in the ear, which can result in temporary or even permanent hearing loss. To add to that, prolonged exposure to high volume levels can cause irreversible tinnitus, a constant ringing sensation in the ears.

A study published in the journal BMJ Public Health reviewed 14 studies involving over 50000 individuals and found that playing video games with the volume raised beyond safe limits increases the risk of hearing damage.

While it is possible for gamers to reduce the risk by lowering the volume while playing, the study highlights the importance of addressing the length of time exposed to high sound levels.

According to guidelines set by the World Health Organization, adults can safely be exposed to 80 decibels for 40 hours a week. However, above this level, the safe amount of noise exposure decreases, with adults allowed to listen to 90 decibels for only four hours a week and 95 decibels for just one hour and 15 minutes. Even lower exposure levels are recommended for children.

The study also reported that the average noise levels in shooting games ranged between 88.5 and 91.2 decibels, with gunfire bursts reaching 119 decibels. Some studies have connected gaming with hearing loss, while others found a link to tinnitus.

Experts wish to educate gamers about the potential dangers of gaming too much and to promote safe listening practices. It is important to lower the volume level by 50%, take regular breaks every hour, and use noise-canceling headphones in noisy environments.

Overall, gamers should be cautious of the potential harm long hours of gaming and exposure to high-volume levels can have on their hearing. By taking the right measures to protect their hearing, gamers can continue to enjoy their favorite pastime.
