The U.S. State Department denied any change in its policy toward Hizbullah following comments made by John Brennan, Assistant to President Barack Obama for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism. "There is no change in U.S. policy toward Hizbullah," a State Department official told the daily As-Safir in remarks published Thursday. "Hizbullah is a terrorist organization and we do not distinguish between the political and the military wings of the group," the official noted.
Earlier this week, Brennan told a conference in Washington that Washington is looking for ways to build up "more moderate elements" within Hizbullah. "There is certainly the elements of Hizbullah that are truly a concern to us what they're doing. And what we need to do is to find ways to diminish their influence within the organization and to try to build up the more moderate elements," Brennan said Tuesday.
