A Syrian court has postponed the trial against Syrian stars and scholars who had organized a demonstration in the heart of Damascus calling for the resignation of Syrian President Bashar Al Asad and his government. The trial date is now scheduled to be held on August 17.
Lawyer Muhannad Husni, who is also head of the Syrian Human Rights Organization, stated that the court postponed the trial due to the fact that many of the defendants did not attend the initial hearing and only 11 out of 28 were present.
A number of Syrian artists and scholars had organized a demonstration a couple of weeks ago in Damascus calling for political reform and an end to the bloodshed caused by Syrian security forces against protesters, who are in opposition of the current government regime. As a result, demonstrators were arrested and accused of treason against the government.
Among the artists who are being put trial are Al Ikhwan Malas, Rima Faleehan, Mai Sakkaf, Reem Mashhadi, Fadi Zaydan, Nidal Hassan, Sarah Al Taweel, Eyad Sharbaji, Givarah Nimr, Mohammad Zaker Al Khaleel and others.
