A business owner in Kuwait has been arrested after a video went viral showing him beating a naked Egyptian worker who apparently worked in his mobile shop, according to multiple reports.

Ali Abdullah al-Shemarri, 40, who is a bidoon, or stateless resident of Kuwait, was filmed 18 months ago beating Egyptian worker Ahsraf Abu al-Yameen, 34, using his hands and a stick and shouting verbal abuse during the beating.

The video was uploaded recently to social media by another Egyptian man, and quickly went viral, earning millions of views in the space of just a few days.

You can watch the video here:

Al-Shemarri confessed to the beating, saying he thrashed al-Yameen after a theft at the mobile phone store he owns in the city of Ahmadi, the Kuwait Times reported, citing Kuwait’s Ministry of Interior as the source of the information.

Al-Shemarri reportedly stripped al-Yameen naked before the beating commenced. After the beating, Al-Yameen apparently didn’t report the crime, the alternative news site EgyptianStreets.com reported Monday. It was reportedly the video’s high visibility on social media that caused Egypt’s Foreign Ministry to ask the Kuwaiti authorities for justice.

Kuwaiti authorities are set to shut down al-Shemarri’s shop, EgyptianStreets reported.

The 31-year-old Egyptian man who filmed the incident was also arrested for having posted it on social media, the Kuwait Times said.
