A football match between rival Jordanian teams ‘Al Ramtha’ and ‘Al Wahdat’ which took place over the weekend at the Qwaisma stadium in Amman ended in supports from both teams throwing rocks at one another. The game ended in a draw and tensions were high, resulting in the violent clash.
This is not the first time that violence has broken out amongst supporters of Al Ramtha and Al Wahdat. A match involving the same teams in 2016 ended in 7 people being seriously injured and resulted in 6 arrests.
Video footage from the match in 2016 can be seen below:
Although ‘Al Wahdat’ is a team in the 'Al Manaseer Professional Football Leage' in Jordan, it is widely known to represent the Palestinian diaspora in Jordan, and many of its supporters are Jordanians of Palestinian origin. ‘Al Wahdat’ is also the name of a Palestinian refugee camp in Amman in which many Palestinian refugees live to this day.
