Extreme weather in the US has caused mass devastation throughout the past week, with at least 43 people being reported dead as a result of storms. Texas has been hit particularly hard, with rare December tornados killing at least 11 people in the state.

While it is not uncommon for a natural disaster such as this to be described as an “act of God,” some have gone a step further by claiming that God is taking direct revenge on Texas for a “draw Muhammad” exhibition.

The Dallas suburb of Garland was the location of the controversial exhibition in May, which featured cartoon pictures of the Islamic prophet. Two Daesh-affiliated shooters attempted to attack the venue where the event was being held, but were killed by a police officer before they could enter.

Garland has seen at least eight fatalities due to the powerful tornados, a fact which has led some to claim that God is punishing the city for the Muhammad cartoon exhibition.

It is not the first time people have claimed God uses tornados to punish so-called "sinners." Last year, Susanne Atanus, a Republican candidate in the Chicago-area, reportedly said that God used tornados to punish the US for marriage equality.
