It’s a story of a jailbreak, revenge and awe. A Syrian Kurdish man managed to break out of a Daesh (ISIS) prison, and is now fighting the militant group alongside Jabhat al-Akrad, ANHA reports.

In the Arabic language video, Mohammad Shaban Daesh picked him up outside his home and took him to prison. He claims to have beaten all over his body, but escaped with his wife and kids, and is now out of the group’s reach. “For three days we moved from place to place, finally linking up with Jabhat al-Akrad,” Shaban said.

Shaban is shown in the video serving with the Kurdish rebel group in Harbel, a village in the Aleppo governorate. “Arabs and Kurds are brothers, and Daesh is a terrorist organization,” he told ANHA on why he fights with Jabhat al-Akrad. “God willing we’ll liberate the whole area from Daesh.”

Jabhat al-Akrad is allied with the People’s Protection Units (YPG)-the largest Kurdish military group in Syria. They are thus part of the US-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which were set up to fight Daesh. Unlike the YPG, however, Jabhat al-Akrad is officially a rebel group.
