West Africa may be most associated with Ebola, but an interactive map serves as a reminder that's far from its only problem.
The map, created by Caleb Weiss, shows the number of al-Qaeda's recent concentrated attacks in Mali. The West African country is facing its own set of political challenges as conflict between separatists and pro-government forces continue, and the extremist group seems to be taking advantage of its vulnerabilities.
Compared with the Middle East, we hardly hear about attacks in Africa. Boko Haram in itself has proved extremism is just as big a problem in the region as in the Arab world, but coverage of the issue is still minimal.
The map below is a stark reminder of al-Qaeda's presence in the region, attacks that seem to have increased so far this year compared with 2014. As Daesh (ISIS) has shown, extremist militants are hardly ever satisfied with one region alone — al-Qaeda is no exception.
