General Motors Middle East registered year-over-year sales growth of 21% in the month of February with total sales of 9,907 vehicles in the region across its three brands: Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC.

The growth was driven by an increase in retail sales – purchases made by individual customers – of 42% across GM’s range of cars, pickups and utilities.

Sales increases were registered across the region with the greatest rise recorded in Iraq, GM Middle East’s second largest market, where sales doubled.

Chevrolet made significant gains during the month with sales up 44%. The popularity of Chevrolet cars, driven by the Aveo, Cruze and Malibu, continues to rise with sales up 68% in February.

Sales were also boosted by strong growth of the Chevrolet Silverado full-size pickup, doubling its sales during February. Other GM models that experienced significant sales growth included the Chevrolet Suburban (up 32%), the Chevrolet Traverse (up 19%), the GMC Sierra (up 59%) and the Cadillac CTS (up 54%).

“February represents another month of double-digit sales growth,” said John Stadwick, President and Managing Director of GM Middle East Operations. “Outstanding sales driven by Chevrolet cars – the Aveo, Cruze and Malibu – prove that our award-winning line up of vehicles is growing in preference among customers in the region.”

The result in February continues a run of successive months of double-digit growth for GM Middle East. Total sales for the first two months of the year have risen 18%, while the company’s retail sales have increased by 35%.

This sales growth momentum is likely to be maintained throughout the year with five new vehicle launches planned for the region in 2011: the all-new Chevrolet Aveo, the all-new Cruze Hatchback, the Camaro Convertible, the new Chevrolet Captiva and the all-new GMC Terrain.

Cadillac was born in 1902. Its founder, Henry Leland, a master mechanic and entrepreneur, named the company after his ancestor, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the founder of Detroit. It was purchased in 1909 by General Motors and within six years, Cadillac laid the foundation for the modern mass production of automobiles by demonstrating the complete interchangeability of its precision parts, also establishing itself as America's premier luxury car.
