He will reprise his role as fighter pilot Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell in the hotly anticipated Top Gun sequel next year.

And Tom Cruise looked in high spirits as he took some down time out of his busy schedule to enjoy an evening at Novikov Restaurant in Mayfair on Friday.

The actor, 57, cut a casual figure for the evening, donning a navy shirt with rolled up sleeves which he paired with dark jeans and black shoes.

Appearing in high spirits, Tom smiled and waved to photographers as he left the popular venue.

Tom has been spending time in London lately and went for a helicopter ride above the city earlier this month.

Along with his work in the Mission Impossible series, Tom's most recent role was in the 2017 film American Made with Domhnall Gleeson and Sarah Wright.

Tom, who is known for performing the majority of his own stunts, learned to fly an Airbus helicopter by himself in a short space of time for 2018's Mission: Impossible – Fallout.

Top Gun: Maverick is set to hit theatres on June 26, 2020. It was originally slated for release on July 12, 2019 but it was delayed so filmmakers can work out logistics with the complex flight scenes, Deadline reported.

Jennifer Connelly, 47, has been on set with Tom, and will play Maverick's love interest, replacing Kelly McGillis who played Charlie in the original.

Val Kilmer, who played Lt. Tom 'Iceman' Kazansky in the original, will also reprise his role in the sequel while Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Jon Hamm and Ed Harris are joining the cast for the second instalment.

Deadline reported that Cruise's character Maverick will be a Top Gun flight instructor in the sequel, and he serves as a mentor to Goose's son.

The sequel is directed by Joseph Kosinski, who previously worked with Tom on Oblivion, and also directed TRON: Legacy.

Tony Scott, who directed the original, was going to helm the sequel but he tragically took his own life in 2012 just as production talks were beginning.

Tom's most recent film was 2018's Mission: Impossible - Fallout which served as the sixth installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise and grossed $791.1million (£650million) at the box office.
