The lovers of the political singer Sheikh Imam celebrated his death seventh anniversary through his most sarcastic song against the American policy and its Arab regimes allies.
Before an audience which overcrowded a large hall and roared with singing and applause at the Russian Cultural Center in Cairo Tuesday evening, an American girl sang one of Imam’s songs, which says, “Welcome Nixon, Water Gate Hero… Sultans of Beans and Oil Highly Evaluated You…”
The Egyptian dialect poet Ahmed Fuad Nagm wrote the song after the October 1973 war and it was composed and sung by Sheikh Imam to become one of the most important inciting songs exploited by the students’ movement in Egypt on January 17, 1977. The poet and singer work became the most important Arabic singing political phenomenon during the period between late sixties and late eighties before the two sides of the work separated.
Nagm opened the ceremony by reading a number of his poems.
Accompanied with Sheikh Imam Afarit Troupe, the Egyptian singer Azzah Balbaa, who participated in the aforementioned work sang a number of songs including Givara Mat, Ya Filistiniyyah Wal Bundkani Ramako and Nah al Nawwah wa al Nawwahah.
The political young singer Mohammed Ezzat sang Bastanzarak, a prominent song for Sheikh Imam. He then performed a number of songs written by late poet Fuad Haddad including the song America -- Albawaba.com
