Shadow of the Colossus is getting a full-on remake. The original 2005 game was one of the greatest entries in the PS2 library, and indeed a statement for gaming's status as art as a whole.
The project is being helmed by Bluepoint Studios, known for their HD remasters of PS2 classics. It looks faithful to the original; to this fan, it's actually rather stunning.
Sony has not confirmed whether the original design team is involved with the game at all.
Shadow of the Colossus has players control The Wanderer, who goes to the Forbidden Lands in order to resurrect a dead woman named Mono. To do so, he and his horse Agro have to find and kill sixteen colossi: giants made of stone, fur, and grass. Each is a puzzle; each will make him pay a price. And as the game progresses, the morality of the Wanderer's quest becomes increasingly ambiguous...
It was a beautiful, exceptionally well-made game, one which focused on gameplay to deepen character relationships and used cutscenes intermittently. The soundtrack, scored by Kow Otani, added breathtaking majesty to the experience.
The original game was released back in 2005 on the PlayStation 2 and received wide critical acclaim. Designed and directed by Fumito Ueda, an animator, it was the spiritual successor to critical darling Ico, another exceptional video game which Ueda had helmed.
Both games were released as part of the Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection, an HD remaster of the games for the PS3.
After a notorious 11-year development cycle, Team Ico's third game, The Last Guardian, released in 2016. The long development process prompted several team members to leave and closed Sony's official Team Ico team; the developers went on to found genDESIGN. Nonetheless, the game received widely positive reviews.
Shadow of the Colossus will release in 2018.
