Salma Hayek's brother is suing Ford following a 2014 car crash in Los Angeles, claiming a supercar made by the company had a mechanical fault that caused the death of his friend.

Sami Hayek, 42, was driving a 2005 Ford GT sports car eastbound on Sunset Boulevard in February 2014 when he lost control of the vehicle, crossed into the westbound lanes and hit a 2011 Toyota Tacoma pickup, police said at the time.

Hayek's friend, Ian Sala De Cuttler, 43, died at the scene, and Hayek says he suffered severe injuries.

He has now filed a lawsuit claiming the car had a 'catastrophic failure', in that the transaxle transferred too much power to one of the rear wheels, TMZ reported Tuesday.

The malfunction sent the powerful sportscar hurtling into oncoming traffic, Hayek claims in the suit.

Hayek says Ford was aware of the 'need to issue a recall' because similar incidents had been reported before the crash, according to TMZ.

The suit says that his friend, Ian Sala De Cuttler, was killed when the pickup truck smashed into the passenger door.

Hayek was taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical center for several broken ribs and facial lacerations, it was reported at the time.

Salma Hayek and her husband were the owners of the car at the time of the crash.

The driver of the pickup, 20-year-old Alvin Javier Gomez, was also taken to the hospital for a broken foot and body pain.

Sami and older sister Salma were born to parents Diana Jimenez Medina, an opera singer and talent scout, and Sami Hayek Dominguez, a businessman who once ran for mayor of Coatzacoalcos, Mexico.

Sami Hayek runs his own design studio in Los Angeles but originally started off studying business administration at Pepperdine.

While studying abroad at the University's Florence campus one year, he had a sudden change of heart.

'I stood up, turned my test in, walked to a phone booth woke my dad up and said, I'm out,' Hayek told People.

He told his father he was going to be a painter, sculptor or architect, to which is father responded: 'Your head is not right.'

But his jump into the creative field paid off, and he has since designed furniture for the likes of Brad Pitt.

He is married to jewelry-designer Daniela Villegas and the two live in a home in the Hollywood Hills.
