Saleh Bakri will be the guest speaker at the Arab Film Festival in Australia later this summer!
He has graced the big screens of some of our most loved Palestinian stories including The Time that Remains (2009), Annemarie Jacir's Salt of this Sea (2008), and When I Saw You (2012), the festival's Opening Night film. Saleh's latest film is Zinzana, a psychological thriller filmed in Jordan.
Although born in Israel and based in Haifa, Saleh comes from strong Palestinian acting stock. His father Mohammed Bakri, is an award-winning actor and the high-profile director of Jenin Jenin, which was banned by the Israeli film board for libel until the Israeli Supreme Court overturned the decision. Saleh's two brothers are also actors.
The Arab Film Festival Australia (AFFA) will be held in Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney between 13-30 August. Now in it's 11th year, it is a chance for Arab filmmakers to showcase their works which explore contemporary Arab cultures. It is becoming part of the Australian cultural calendar, allowing rich stories to be told which give a voice to those who are frequently misunderstood or unheard.
Check out highlights from last year's festival, which showcased features, short, dramas and documentaries from Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, UAE and the USA.
