ALBAWABA - Even though his return to the MCU seemed expected, Marvel fans were surprised to see Robert Downey Jr., 59, revealed as the villain Doctor Doom.

After an absence of five years, Robert Downey Jr. is making a triumphant return to the Marvel superhero universe—albeit, he will not be playing the character that started the megahit series, Iron Man.

Dr. Victor Von Doom, a major antagonist in the comic books that inspired the hit TV show, will play the actor's return role.

Coming out in May 2026, Avengers: Doomsday will include Downey Jr., and the following year, in Secret Wars, there will be yet another installment.

New Marvel franchise stars made their debut at the Comic Con in San Diego.

Downey Jr. surprised fans by appearing on stage while disguised as Doctor Doom, donning his signature green cloak and famous mask.

His statement to the press was as follows: "I like playing complicated characters."

With his 2008 debut in Iron Man, the 59-year-old played a pivotal role in establishing the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

A formidable foe who claims expertise in both science and magic, Doctor Doom has been an ally of the Fantastic Four for quite some time. In some comedic takes, Doom intentionally scars himself, while in others, he conceals his face behind a mask after a minor injury marred his otherwise impeccable appearance.

Comic book readers have eagerly anticipated the cinematic debut of Doom, widely recognized as one of Marvel's most renowned villains.

Robert Downey Jr.'s casting as Doctor Doom caught Marvel Cinematic Universe fans unawares, even if they had been anticipating his return as Iron Man.

Despite sharing Tony Stark's traits as an egotistical, charming genius, Doom's design distinguishes him as a unique character, not a mere replica of Iron Man.
