Politicians have finally met their match on television with Lebanese singer Nancy Ajram receiving a special request to be the guest on the Qatari satellite television channel Al Jazeera on the political show “Al Itijah Al Muakis” (The Other Side). The host of the show has invited the singer to be on his show to discuss with her the recent commotion her song “Akhasmak Aah” (I’ll Upset You) has caused throughout the Arab world, reported the London based daily, Al Sharq Al Awsat.
It was added that Nancy’s business manager Jiji Lamara has announced that the singer was never banned in Egypt by the Egyptian parliament and that her songs are being aired on a daily basis on different Egyptian television stations.
Ajram, who has reached stardom around the Arab world, revealed that she had put a lot of effort into herself to be a successful singer. The singer denied that her looks, seductive moves, or her revealing cloths are what made her reach the top. Nancy stressed that ever since she was a little girl she has been studying music and had in fact learned to play a number of musical instruments.
Nancy admits that her popularity came after she released the hit single “Akhasmak Aah”, and that it caught the eyes of viewers for the fact that she underwent many daring and seducing moves. But Nancy added that looks were not the only factor that made her and the song a success, and that if she did not possess a talent for singing, album sales would not be so high.
Nancy added that her appearance in the video clips does not necessarily reflect her as a person. She admits that the way she looked in the clips was a result of the producer’s wishes. The singer also stressed that she did not undergo numerous plastic surgeries and in fact had only one done.
Nancy said that her songs were never banned in Egypt and that the news was a false rumor. It was added that on July 4, 2003 Nancy held a live concert at the Alexandria song festival. It was rumored that an official request by the Egyptian Parliament had been released demanding the ban of Ajram’s songs. The Parliament has ordered that all satellite and local TV stations stop the airing of Nancy’s songs, especially “Akhasmak Aah” (I’ll Upset You Yes), due to the nature of its content and the manner in which the music video is shot.
It was stated that these kinds of songs are not suitable for an Arab audience and should not be allowed to be broadcasted. The music video for the song “Akhasmak Aah” is too demeaning and does not respect the traditional Eastern values for the fact that it is filmed inside a bar and the singer undergoes dirty dancing in an attempt to seduce the male customers.
Parliament officials said that Nancy shows no form of respect for the viewers when she displays such work. It was mentioned that all necessary actions will be taken to ensure that Nancy’s music is not aired and anyone who does not abide will be faced with legal prosecution. –Albawaba.com
