Egypt's own Hollywood star, Omar Sharif, has been nominated to play the role of an Egyptian father who lives through all the political changes in the area of the Red Sea Port Said since the UK-France-Israel assault on the country in 1956.
The dramatic series Al Fanar, written by Majdi Saber and based on true heroic stories, will cover the political and social history of the region throughout the War of Attrition, the 1967 defeat and the return of refugees after the October War in 1973, according to Akhbar Al Nugoom magazine.
Significant events did not stop there, and will be covered in the series. The area was transformed into a free economic zone under a policy of economic openness that left its mark on the social and political thinking of the residents.
Magdi Saber told the magazine that he wanted to prove that the Arab-Israeli conflict had not come to an end, despite the peace treaty signed between Egypt and Israel in 1979.
The TV series also sheds light on the impact of the Palestinian Intifada on Egyptian society in the frontline region, the report said.
Other stars nominated to take part in the series include Laila Olwi, Huda Sultan, Mohammed Riyad, Ahmed Abdel Aziz, Khaled Zaki, and Mahmoud Al Jundi.
Majdi Abu Emirah, who directed such landmark series as Haret Al Mahrousah (Al Mahroussa Quarter) and Al Rajol Al Akher (The Other Man), is expected to direct Al Fanar, said the magazine.
Saber has also wrapped up scripting his new series Jaber Maamoun Nassar, which is scheduled to air in the holy month of Ramadan - Albawaba.com
