Singing superstar Nicki Minaj has told how she nearly fell foul of of the UAE’s public indecency laws during her recent trip to Dubai.
In a recent interview with SU chat-show host Jimmy Kimmel, Minaj detailed an experience where she almost gave a plain-clothes policeman a big hug.
The ‘Super Bass’ songstress wowed fans in the emirate in December at the Atelier Show at Meydan Racecourse with a zany set packed with weird and wonderful wigs, colourful costume changes - and hits galore.
Minaj told 7DAYS after the entertainment extravaganza, that she’d fallen in love with Dubai just as much as the fans loved her, adding that she'd love to come back to the emirate for a holiday and that Dubai would be a “great” host of the prestigious MTV EMA music awards.
And appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the diva told the host: "I went to Dubai. I almost got in so much trouble because the guys in Dubai are so cute. It's not even funny. One of the rules [is] you can't hug a man if you're not married to the man. And so when we were leaving, there was this one guy that was so cute, I was like, 'Bye!' because I just wanted to have this one last moment to... savour the moment."
Little did the Harajuku Barbie know that the man was a police officer.
"Literally, I didn't know he was a cop. They don't have a police [uniform]. It was like a private airport. They were just dressed in their regular garments. I went to give him a hug, and it was literally, I almost felt like time stopped in Dubai. I felt like everything froze. Every single person turned around in slow motion like, 'Nooo!',” said Minaj.
The incident made her entourage nervous, she said, adding: "Everyone in my team thought I was going to be put in jail. It was the scariest thing. He kinda put his arms up a little bit and cracked a nervous smile, and I was just like, 'I'm sorry, I'm sorry!' and I just left."
The American Idol judge had earlier said the emirate’s glitzy, glamorous feel was ‘very Nicki Minaj’ - “it so is!” - the American artist added: “It’s so beautiful. It just feels like that if you ever wanted to be a princess, this is the place you’d want to be married - it feels so romantic and rich.”
