ALBAWABA - Indian actor and producer, Sohum Shah recently sued popular streaming service Netflix after claiming that the plot for his 2009 film, 'Luck' was reportedly stolen to make its popular K-drama Squid Game, according to the Daily Mail.

IMDB describes 'Luck' as, "An underworld kingpin recruits people endowed with 'Luck' from across the globe to take part in a series of challenges designed to test their 'Luck' factor, as gamblers around the world bet on them."

According to the Daily Mail, Shah claimed to have written the script for 'Luck' in 2006 which was released in India, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates in 2009.

The Indian producer also claimed that Hwang Dong-hyuk (Squid Game's writer) wrote Squid Game's plotline in 2009, right after 'Luck's' release in cinemas. Additionally, Shah said that Netflix would've seen the movie due to its "considerable advertising and marketing."

Shah reportedly asked for a portion of Squid Game's profits and aims to prevent Netflix from further "infringing" the copyright law for his film.

The premise isn't exclusive to either Netflix or Shah as many other forms of media follow a similar plotline like the beloved manga and anime 'Kaiji' which follows the story of a character by the same name who is a down-on-his-luck gambler. He's given an offer to board a luxurious ship and play a series of games and challenges in hopes of becoming debt-free.

Fun fact: Kaiji's manga started getting published in Kodansha's seinen manga magazine and Weekly Young Magazine in February 1996.

Moreover, even Netflix's live-action adaptation of the manga 'Alice in Borderland' follows a similar plotline.

Fans of Squid Game can expect a season 2 on Dec. 26, 2024, which will continue where the first season stopped.
