The Iraqi-Canadian hip-hop artist is making waves with his new music video, “Chobi Bryant,” a sort-of sequel to his 2015’s “Makoo.”
In the video (directed by Narcy—real name Yassin Alsalman—himself), a new immigrant working at his uncle’s shawerma shop. The song and video detail his feelings at feeling like a misfit when Haydar, played in the video by Iraqi artist Cheb Moha, steals the spotlight in the shawerma shop becoming a (hilariously over-the-top) Instagram celebrity.
The track itself focuses on inner conflicts in immigrant communities in North America, spun to a pretty great drum beat with clear Arabic influences veined through the chorus. The video mixes live-action footage with stop-motion animation to great effect.

Apart from his work as a musician, Narcy is an accomplished writer; his book The Diatribes of a Dying Tribe is highly recommended.
