Egyptian comedy star Mohammed Subhi will perform the play Mama America Monday as part of the first Doha Cultural Festival activities which was opened last week and will continue until the end of this month.

“ I was surprised with the Qatari festival organizers asking for this play in particular,” Subhi told press reporters.

Subhi condemned the stances of the American president George Bush towards Palestinians and Iraq. He believes that an attack on Iraq would mean an attack on all Arabs.

Responding to a question about his visit to the US 10 years ago, he said, “my son studies at the American University and I respect the American people who are easy to deal with.” He added, “but we are unable to take our Arab issue to the American people.”

The comedy actor took a swipe at Americanization and the consumption orientation among Arab people. “Our societies turned towards consuming Hamburgers and Coca Cola which made us forget lentils and beans,” said Subhi blasting the Arab intellectuals who consider any speech about Zionism and conspiracy as exaggeration and adolescence.

The renowned actor called for a theater that respects the peoples’ minds and for a mature cinema. He pushed the blame on the public for watching low standard performances reiterating that he focuses on a theater that is not skeptical and not too distant from people. He asserted that there is no contradiction between laughing and intellect.

Responding to a question on September 11 attacks, he said, “these attacks are not free of Zionists criminal acts even if bin Laden and Taliban were accused of. I am against these attacks.” He added, “we are all scared now as they taught us to sit everywhere and say we aren’t terrorist in order to make us forget that we are resistant to Israel which is more cunning and evil.”

He reiterated that Britain was the main reason behind all our miseries in the Arab World -- Albawaba.com
