Miss Lebanon Christina Sawaya announced that she wouldn’t participate in the forthcoming Miss World Contest in solidarity with the Palestinian people.
“My invitation to participate in Miss World contest reached Lebanon but the circumstances prevailing in the region prevents Lebanon from participating in the event. In solidarity with the Palestinian people, we have decided not to participate in the event and this is the least that we can do,” Sawaya told the Arabic daily al Hayat.
She added, “the program which I have assumed responsibility for and is related to taking care of the elderly is about to be finalized. Very soon the elderly care house will be opened as a result of the efforts I made along with the charity organizations and the concerned ministries. This has marked the first stage of my project after which I will embark on the biggest project, the establishment of a comprehensive center with international specifications to provide care for the elderly. The land on which the center will be built has been donated to us.”
Swaya pointed out that education and personality played a big role in Miss Lebanon election as the beauty of the candidates and their outside appearance constituted one third of the qualifying elements. The second third was for the appearance, standing and behavior. The remaining one third was for intellectuality. On many occasions one girl surpasses another although her beauty might be less. Personally I am not a lumpish dummy and I am against the saying, ‘be beautiful and keep silent.’ But a girl cannot also succeed for merely being intellectual.”
Christina who specializes in Business Administration said, “since childhood I have been fond of the media and business worlds. I advocate the woman involvement in the society and hate stagnation. I am practical and like the woman to affirm her presence and interact with others. I cannot imagine myself as a saloon woman and holding a cigarette.” -- Albawaba.com
