The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has decided to appoint the Lebanese singer Majedah al-Roomi as its international ambassador.

The step has come as a confirmation of the renowned singer’s humanitarian and social commitment and her care for people suffering from poverty and pain, according to Rozarito Bagano, FAO Ambassadors’ program official.

After accepting the title with delight, the Lebanese artist told al-Hayat newspaper that she would go to the FAO headquarters in Rome on October 16, 2001 to participate in an official ceremony to be attended by leader of member countries to appoint her officially and mark the start of her job as an ambassador. She will join a group of ambassadors, including the American Jazz singer, Di Di Bridgewater, Italian actor, Jean lulu Brigida, legendary African singer, Merriam Makiba, Noble Prize winner, Rita Levy Montalshiny, Senegalese singer, Yosso Ndour, and the Chinese actor Gong Lee who have preceded her in the job since 1991.

The task of the title bearer is to draw world attention to the unacceptable situation of about 800 millions of people suffering from poverty, and chronic malnutrition in an unprecedented era of wealth in some parts of the world.

Majeda told al Hayat newspaper that she is delighted with the “humanitarian comprehensive track she has been following in her artistic career. I have made every effort to include the humanitarian element in my art because I always consider any art without humanity a failing art. What I planted, has blossomed.”
