This afternoon, the Melbourne International Film Festival awarded Ali’s Wedding the Age Critics Award for the best Australian feature film, beating-out other heavy-weight contenders like Ben Elton’s film Three Summers.
Judges were unanimous in giving Ali’s Wedding first place.
The film, starring Osamah Sami, is about an Iraqi Muslim in Australia who lies to his parents, telling them he’s a med student in hopes of securing time to figure-out that most difficult of modern Muslim questions:
Is he going to marry the girl he loves, or the girl his parents approve of?
The film, which wrapped 18 months ago but which has been steadily gaining buzz since, will be releasing August 31.
