Playwright Lenin Al Ramli has released his latest comedy, Adam Wa Hawaa (Adam and Eve), directed by Mohsen Hilmi and costarring Abla Kamel, Mamdouh Wafi, Rania Farid Shawki and a number of young actors.
The play consists of a moderated debate between a husband, Dr. Hasib Kamel (Mamdouh Wafi), and his wife, Dr. Hafizah Thabet (Abla Kamel), who both work as lawyers and are active on issues of gender equality.
The moderator starts the debate by popping a number of questions, such as whether women have the right to equal status with men. Are women victims, as they claim, or are they strong, as men claim? Are men treacherous by nature, or are there any reasons they betray women? Do men have the right to alimony after a divorce, or is this right limited to women alone?
Dr. Hafizah attacks the ostensible male perspective about women in the debate, and their oppressive beliefs, which men use as a tool to annihilate and make women invisible. Hafizah likens men to thieves who rob women of their simplest, most basic human rights.
For his part, Dr. Hasib suggests that women use men as a tool to ruthlessly satisfy their desires. He says women even use men like a draft animal, whose job it is to simply spend money on them to make them happy.
The debate takes a turn to present family problems, and it becomes clear that the couple is on the verge of separation after they uncover all the secret details of their relationship. The secretary, Elham (Rania Farid Shawqi), attempts to lure the husband to fall in love with her and so she can take him from his wife and children – Albawaba.com
