Kuwait bans WICKED movie possibly over 'gay character' concerns

ALBAWABA - Despite the great success the "WICKED" movie is generating in cinemas across the United States, Kuwait became the first Arab country to ban the movie.

Despite that the government in Kuwait hasn't clarified the real reason behind banning the film, however, speculations online revealed that it might be over the possible existence of an LGBTQ+ character.

Kuwaiti authorities decided to ban the fantasy and romance film "WICKED" from being shown in cinemas in Kuwait, after it was scheduled to be released on December 5.

ET Arabic said citing sources that the decision came after the film's production company refused to edit scenes in the film that were objected to by censorship. 

Although the Ministry of Information has not yet issued an official statement, there is speculation that the decision to ban the movie may be related to the film including unwanted scenes that are not appropriate for Kuwaiti society and were not approved by censorship.

This is not the first time, Kuwait bans screening of a movie, last August, authorities banned Barbie movie amid criticism over its social values.

WICKED movie tells the story of Glinda, a popular girl, and Elphaba, a misunderstood young woman over her green skin. The two become friends at Shiz University in the Land of Oz.

The main stars of the movie are Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jeff Goldblum, Ethan Slater, Jonathan Bailey and many more artists.
