As the Arabic saying goes, “Laughing without a reason is rude.”
But Instagrammers had a good reason to laugh on Monday, when Lindsay Lohan made a total ass out of herself on Instagram.
The 28-year-old posted what she thought was an inspirational quote in Arabic, only later to find out that it was quite the opposite.
"You're beautiful," Lindsay wrote in English.
However, the Arabic writing really translated into: "You're a donkey"! That's an insult in Arab culture.
The Mean Girls star has since deleted the quote-gone-wrong from her account.
According to the Daily Mail, this isn't the first time Lindsay's landed herself in hot water with Arabic speakers.
In January, she uploaded a photo mourning the passing of Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah by using the words 'Inshallah' (God willing) and 'Wallahi' (I promise by God).
Neither statement made sense in the context of the 90-year-old's passing!
Sorry LiLo, your attempt to inspire has backfired. As TMZ put it, she had a "little donkey show of her own"!
But to avoid that happening again, here's a bunch of correctly-translated inspirational Arabic quotes that you can Instagram next time:
- “The smarter you are, the less you speak.” إذا تم العقل نقص الكلام
- “There’s always tomorrow.” إن مع اليوم غدا يا مسعدة
- “Experimentation is the greatest science.” التجربة العلم الكبير
