Egyptian announcer Mariam Amin decided to halt the variety programs Dehk wa Laa’b wa Gad wa Hobb (Laughter, Playing, Seriousness and Love) and Tahani wa Aghani (Congratulations and Songs) aired by the Egyptian satellite channel 2. “I can’t present variety and songs while Palestinians are being slaughtered and our sacred shrines being humiliated,” she said.
Mariam Amin who gained wide popularity in the Arab world and among the Arab communities in the European capitals through her programs Saloon and Drama Stars reiterated that an announcer is not an entertainment tool or a model who captivates the audience with her light clothes but rather a woman of an attitude and message.
“My psychological condition has very much worsened due to what is going on in the Palestinian occupied territories. I feel sad for every martyr who is my brother or father and I felt that I should as an Arab have a stance towards these Zionist massacres. Therefore I decided to stop two of the programs that I usually present as a means of a simple expression to my audience through which I tell them that nothing should make us busy except treating our wound in Palestine,” Amin told the UAE daily al Bayan.
The Egyptian announcer believes that the “media and art workers should take specific stances towards Israel such as rejection of normalizing with Israel and boycotting all the Israeli and American products and goods in addition to the need for the unity of all to raise funds necessary for supporting the Palestinians including financial, arm and other support. Media should play an effective role in revealing the Israeli policy and its crimes and convey this to the world’s public opinion.”
She added, “I think the Arab satellite channels’ correspondents in the occupied lands have become mirrors for their people so that everybody will see the horrid Israeli crimes with sound and image. They also endured the crimes of the Israeli army, which assaulted them. Examples of these are Tareq Abdel Jaber, Egyptian TV correspondent, who was shot and Shurooq Asa’ad, Nile News Channel correspondent, whose office was destroyed and robbed and assaulted along with her office colleagues and photographers. This is in addition to Abu Dhabi satellite channel correspondent who was deported by the Israeli authorities. These correspondents affirmed the patriotism of the Arab media and became a spike in the throat of Israel. But I am afraid the Arab satellite channels might reach a situation where their programs and news bulletins become just words on the air or angry discussions which have no influence on the world and Arab public opinion. Therefore there should be a system which all the Arab satellite channels should establish in order to serve the Palestinian issue and achieve it through media.” -- Albawaba.com
