Duraid Lahham's family deny he will renounce his Syrian citizenship if Assad's regime falls

The family of the highly respected Syrian actor, Duraid Lahham, has categorically denied that the star will denounce his citizenship should the Assad regime fall.

The actor's family, currently living in Lebanon to avoid the increasingly bloody conflict, issued a statement that was widely circulated on the social networking website Facebook, denying the rumors, describing them as political. The rumors started after Lahham was interviewed on satellite channel Al Manar.

According to Sayidaty.net, the statement said, ‘We, the family of Duraid Lahham, verify that the rumor is completely untrue, and stress that our verifying that the rumor is not true is not a political stance, but rather to stress the love for our roots and country. We are confident that there is a conspiracy against Duraid Lahham and his family.”

The Syrian actor's family also urged for fellow Syrians to not believe baseless conjecture, before adding that now is the time for all Syrians to unite and end the bloodshed. The civil war has claimed at 70,000 lives according to the latest statistics from the United Nations and caused over one million refugees to seek safety in neighboring countries.

Lahham, who was once appointed a UNICEF goodwill ambassador but had it removed following controversial comments, has been targeted by false rumors since the start of the uprising over two years ago.

The star is currently in Syria, despite the obvious risks, to finish filming scenes of the new television drama “San’oud Ba’id Qalil” (We Will Return Shortly), which he plays the leading role in.
