American actor Martin Sheen, winner of multiple Emmy and Golden Globe Awards, will be honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the 10th edition of Dubai International Film Festival in December.
The actor, who shot to stardom with Francis Ford Coppola‘s acclaimed filmApocalypse Now, will be felicitated at the opening ceremony of the festival, which runs from December 6-14.
“I am truly honoured to accept the Dubai International Film Festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award and looking forward to celebrating the region’s gifted cinematic storytellers,” said Sheen in a statement. With this, he joins the ranks of previous recipients Omar Sharif, Sean Penn, Amitabh Bachchan and Adel Imam.
Born Ramon Estevez, Sheen was born to a Spanish immigrant father and an Irish mother and has appeared in more than 80 films. Sheen is best known for his films including The Departed, Catch Me If You Can and The American President. He also won the television audiences over by playing US President Josiah Bartlet in the political drama The West Wing, nabbing him six of his eight Golden Globe nominations and two individual SAG Awards for the acclaimed White House series.
“Martin Sheen is a cinematic legend whose remarkable career has spanned five decades. In that time he has brought to life a huge variety of compelling, intelligent and wonderfully engaging characters on the big and small screen. We are honoured to present Martin Sheen with a DIFF Lifetime Achievement Award and we look forward to welcoming him to Dubai,” said Abdulhamid Juma, the Chairman of DIFF, in a statement.
