Dubai is not a subtle place. The city’s ostentatiousness seeps into its skyline, its aesthetics, the way it advertises itself, and the events it likes to promote.
So in what can only be described as “typically Dubai,” a comedy show entitled The Best in International Stand Up Comedy will be starting at the Park Rotana Abu Dhabi at 8 p.m. on Sept. 6th, 2017. That is exactly a week from now. Other dates can be found here.
This month’s iteration we can only describe in the luxurious, almost gauche prose of the Gulf: “An outrageous and hard-living survivor, Jo Jo comes from the straight-talking, risk-taking school of UK stand-up – a comedic force who is taking no prisoners.”
Which is to say that Jojo Smith is iconclastic and will be performing at the event. With her will be the “bemused observational Englishman” John Moloney. To which we say: that's not the meaning of “bemused” and “Moloney” sounds Irish (but who are we to judge?). Then there’s Jeff Innocent, who is “topical and slyly witty.”
In better news, these are all accomplished, award-winning comedians, and are well worth seeing. Go in and have a laugh. Tickets are going for AD 140 (approx. $40).
And maybe afterwards we can give copywriters in the UAE an English-writing course.
