Cinema Akil Screening: Poisonous Roses

Set in impoverished Cairo, “Poisonous Roses” is a drama directed and written by Ahmed Fawzi Saleh. Taheya, a 28-year-old washroom cleaner, and her younger brother, Saqr, live in a tannery neighbourhood, where leather is made. Both are close but when Saqr – who works at one of the tanneries – is eager to leave his job, rifts occur between the siblings. Saqr enters a relationship with a young medical student named Nahed and Taheya begins grasping at straws to keep ahold of her brother.
