The American Film Institute has announced its picks for the best movies and TV shows of 2017.

The organization's favorite films of the year were The Big SickCall Me by Your NameDunkirkThe Florida ProjectGet OutLady BirdThe PostThe Shape of WaterThree Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Wonder Woman.

The group also celebrated excellence on the small screen, singling out for praise the series Big Little LiesThe CrownFeud: Bette and JoanGame of ThronesThe Good PlaceThe Handmaid's TaleInsecureMaster of NoneStranger Things and This is Us.

The docu-series The Vietnam War earned the AFI Special Award

"At a time when the world seems defined by division, storytellers bring us together as one," Bob Gazzale, president and chief executive officer of AFI, said in a statement Thursday. "AFI Awards is honored to celebrate this community of artists who challenge and inspire us, entertain and enlighten us -- ultimately reminding us of our common heartbeat."
