Syrian artist Bassem al-Sayer takes his inspiration from the banks of the Euphrates river, where he was born and where he has chosen to live.
Al-Sayer has been influenced by the legacy of the Mesopotamian era, one that was rich in culture and art.
“When I was a child, my eyes were always glued on the ornamentations and engravings inscribed on the arches and drawings on the walls” he said, describing his hometown.
The image of towering temples, Babylonian birds with cloud sized wings and busting crowds make constant appearances in al-Sayer’s work
The artist has chosen to depict life in a different era, his work could easily be mistaken for ancient wall paintings portraying chalky figures as they engage in, what seem to be, mass celebrations.
Al-Sayer enjoys the use of organic colors, choosing red and brown over the vast array of paint available to a modern artist, he believes it represents the earth in its most natural form.
