Egyptian rising star Basma will return to her original job as a TV announcer, while the new actress Rania Hussein, better known as Rubi, is gearing up for a similar job, according to the London-based Arabic daily Al Sharq Al Awsat.
Earlier, Basma worked for Egyptian TV and presented more than gameshows. But her artistic orientation and participation in more than one film, including Al Madinah (City) directed by Yusri Nasrallah, and Al Naser Saladin, directed by Sharif Arafafah, stood as an obstacle in her way.
She was tripped up by the fact that Egyptian TV rules bar employees from taking other jobs, whether in acting or media with other channels not members of the Egyptian Radio and TV Confederation.
Basma’s last appearance on the big screen was in the film Al Na’amah Wal Tawous (The Ostrich and the Peacock). She played a prominent role in the film, for which she won the acting award at the Alexandria International Film Festival. Next, she won the Egyptian cinematography award for best new actress at the festival.
Moreover, director Amr Abdeen chose her to take a starring role in her TV debut in the seven-episode series Al A’ye, written by Lenin Al Ramli.
“Working for Dream Channel allows me to practice my acting hobby as I present a program on the most famous video songs broadcast for the first time during the channel testing phase,” said Basma, cited by the daily.
For her part, Rubi said that her work in advertising and participation in music videos, in addition to her starring role in the film Sukkot Hansawwar (Quiet, We Will Shoot) had paved the way for her TV work.
She is now receiving special training in how to be an announcer at the Dream Satellite Channel.
“I'll maintain my artistic name as an announcer at Dream Channel and I am now training for about one month, after which I will try to present one program or more on the Dream screen. I was hoping to become an announcer, and I feel that this job will have an impact on my character and life. I tend to lean toward talk shows, but I don’t like to embarrass my guests...I just want to be a plain announcer because I don't like the exaggeration of some hosts, particularly the way they look." – Albawaba.com
