Unfortunately for Asala Nasri, she's managed once more to make a scene, and not the kind that's necessarily doing her any favors in her career as a popular star. The hapless singer can't seem to please anyone lately, after speaking her mind on the Syria situation recently caused a rucus with Lebanese celebs.
Her recent concert at the annual Carthage Music Festival was rated a complete failure. A local Tunisian radio station Shams FM called Asala’s concert out for being low on attendance and poor in performance. Many have tied her less than successful event to her unretiring stance on her home country's raging battles.
Asala is known to side with the 'people' against Assad. A position, while considered quite standard in some circles, is still quite brow-raising for the Syrian celeb set who were often notorious for their loyaty and good relations with the regime.
The concert was hardly a sell-out, and the famed elephant stampedes of the ancient city were nowhere in site. The venue's capacity for 12,000 was barely touched by the 4,000 odd fans. The spattering of attendees were not impressed when their requests for their upbeat favorite numbers were not heeded as Asala preferred to stick to a repertoire of sad whistful ballads. Not what the people wanted.
Asala, more Syrian politics than music at the moment, can't seem to find a way to please all her fans as it is without fumbling her music. She also found herself having to apologise for stumbling through some of her line-up, botching up lyrics and missing the beat. She put it down to her tense state of mind and grief over events back home.
While the scathing audience were less than forgiving of her distracted mind-set, Asala did not hold back on why she thought it had all gone wrong. Her theory was that the Tunisians had boycotted her concert in Carthage because of their opposition to the Syrians' revolution.
