Ahlam Ali Al Shamsi, known by her stage name Ahlam, was the star of The Queen series, which saw the songstress sitting on a throne with her fans competing to impress her and win an ornate ring.

In the first episode, the 47-year-old asks contestants, who come from across the Arab world, how much they love her and if they are willing to do everything she asks of them.

Viewers quickly took to social media calling for the show to be cancelled and for the arrogant 'queen' to be 'dethroned'.

Government-owned channel Dubai TV apparently agreed with viewers' wishes and swiftly axed the show.

In an interview after the launch of her show Ahlam said 'of course I am arrogant.

'There is nothing new that I am arrogant,' she told the Al Arabiya News Channel.

But, in a rare show of humility, the singer-turned-TV-star, said: 'God blessed me and some people call me a queen, and I don’t like to be named as the queen and my name is Ahlam.'

The singer insisted, despite the hostile reception to her new show, many people saw her as a kind, humane person, and added 'in the end I am just a human'.

Ahlam has a chequered past and her numerous TV appearances have created controversy.

In Arab Idol, which she joined as a judge in 2011, her alleged 'tackiness' led to the Lebanese superstar Ragheb Alama leaving as one of the show's co-judges.

She is married to the famous Qatari rally champion, Mubarak Al-Hajiri, with whom she has three children and is popular on social media, having the most followers of any Middle East celebrity.
