“The Beast of the City,” a play recently performed by the National Theater Band in Aleppo, deals with real social and political issues, according to the Syria Times.
The play, which is based on a tragicomedy by Turkish writer Aziz Nissin, narrates the story of Nuri, a simple-hearted man who loses his identity card.
The card is taken by a criminal, the aforementioned beast of the city, who commits a number of crimes using it to forge his identity. The quick-witted police arrest the simple-hearted man, who comes to the police station by accident to complain about his neighbor’s behavior. He is jailed because the police think they have snared the beast of the city, and becomes the prey of reporters who try to uncover the secrets of his crimes.
Starring is Omar Hajo, who plays the role of the beastly antagonist, alongside Huda Al Rakbi and others.
The tragicomic side of the tale emerges from the fact that ordinary people do not usually know what is really going on in their societies, especially in terms of exploitation and violence, unless they find themselves enmeshed in these problems.
