ALBAWABA - Due to fuel shortages across Gaza, Palestinians have resorted to Mother Nature for alternatives to survive the harsh winter. A Palestinian kid came up with the idea of turning olive cake residue into fuel blocks to be used for cooking and heating.
Since it is olive oil pressing season, the amount of olive cake residue that goes to waste every year is enormous. As the saying goes, "Necessity is the mother of invention", Palestinian kid Nader and his friends decided to make use of olive cake residue to help their people in times of need.
In an interview with Arab World Press (AWP), Nader said that, with the help of his friends, they gather the olive cake residue to make molds that can be used as firewood substitutes.
"We go to olive pressing spots and gather the residue, which we use later to make around 2,000 molds," Nader told AWP. Olive cake residue is known for being highly flammable for extended periods of time.
The mold-making process does not require much, Nader said, they use rudimentary tools to get the job done. "We only need a handy hammer, a mold, and a pillow to sit on".
Palestinians across Gaza have been struggling with severe fuel, food, and water shortages for more than 50 days now since the Israeli government announced a full ban on fuel entry and other humanitarian necessities.
