ALBAWABA The Green Party Member of Parliament Golriz Ghahraman, the party's justice spokesperson, has resigned amidst a scandal involving allegations of shoplifting from multiple high-end clothing stores in Auckland and Wellington.
The controversy began to unfold on December 23, when accusations surfaced that Ghahraman had shoplifted from Scotties Boutique in Ponsonby, Auckland. Subsequently, a second incident at the same boutique came to light and is currently under investigation.
While the owners and staff of Scotties Boutique have refrained from making public statements, it's been reported that CCTV footage of the alleged incidents has been reviewed by the New Zealand Herald.
As the controversy deepened, additional allegations against Ghahraman emerged, this time from Cre8iveworx, a high-end boutique in Wellington. The store reported an alleged shoplifting incident involving the MP to the police on October 26.
The police, in turn, confirmed that they were investigating the allegations but were unable to confirm specific individual identities.
The news of Ghahraman's alleged shoplifting was first reported by Newstalk ZB Plus on January 10, sparking public attention and media scrutiny. In response to the mounting accusations, Ghahraman decided to resign from her position with immediate effect, stating that she takes "full responsibility" for her actions.
In her first public comments since the allegations surfaced, Ghahraman attributed her actions to mental health problems related to her work.
