ALBAWABA In recent days, Dutch seismologist Frank Hoogerbeets has become a prominent figure in the world of earthquake prediction.
His controversial forecasts have gained attention, particularly after it was revealed that he had predicted a major earthquake just days before a devastating earthquake struck Morocco, resulting in significant casualties and displacements.
The Dutch scientist's prediction of a new earthquake, along with the specified location, was widely circulated by news outlets and social media alike. However, it has become clear to us that what was circulated was incorrect.
Frank took to his official X (formerly known as Twitter) account and denied this information and said:
"Some media seem to claim that I "predicted" another big quake in Morocco. This claim is false. I answered questions here about the current threat. Usually, after an earthquake like on 8 September, smaller aftershocks (M 4-5) occur. Another large one is less likely."
"Contrary to certain claims, I did NOT say that there will be a tsunami next week. My explanation is purely meant to raise general awareness."
In his most recent updates posted through the SSGEOS geological agency's social media account, Hoogerbeets predicted future seismic activity.
Hoogerbeets also issued a caution for those living near the coasts of Portugal, Spain, or Morocco, as he believes that significant seismic activity in these regions could potentially trigger tsunamis. He stressed the importance of awareness and preparedness.
The Dutch seismologist has consistently defended his forecasting methods, which are based on planetary movements and alignments.
He believes that there is a correlation between these celestial events and seismic activity on Earth.
According to Hoogerbeets, when certain planets and the moon align in specific ways, it can lead to clusters of stronger earthquakes. He emphasizes that this is a known phenomenon in seismology, where periods of heightened activity are often followed by relative calm.
Hoogerbeets repeated predictions have generated global concern and even panic in some cases.
This anxiety is fueled by his claims of successfully predicting earthquakes or tremors before they occurred, including the devastating earthquake in Turkey on February 6th of the previous year.
He had forecasted that earthquake just three days before it struck, resulting in over 50,000 fatalities and tens of thousands of injuries and displacements.
