More than ten crimes a day were recorded at churches during the pandemic, new figures show.

Of 4,170 reported incidents in the last year, 1,356 were thefts or burglaries, 1,688 criminal damage and 823 violent attacks.

South East England is the worst hit with Sussex Police recording 367 crimes, Kent 209 and the Met 575.

In Sussex, police recorded six sexual assaults, including a rape, in churchyards.

Mo Metcalf-Fisher, of the Countryside Alliance, which compiled the figures, said it was ‘a grim reality that many churches are treated as easy targets by criminals’.
