In an attempt to battle Gulf obesity, the municipality of Dubai is awarding gold to citizens in return for weight-loss, local media reported.
The campaign is called “Your Weight in Gold,” and is taking place during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, in which Muslims do not eat, drink, smoke, or have sexual intercourse during daylight hours. Ramadan ends in the middle of August.
The initiative runs until August 16 and pledges to give a gram of gold for every kilo lost, with a minimum of two kilos, reported AFP.
Contestants will have to use scales in public parks and hear advice from dieticians about healthy ways to lose weight, before they are entered in a drawing where three participants will win a gold coin valued around 20,000 dirhams ($5,449), AFP reported.
