The Arab youth told Abu Dhabi Civil Court that the regional airline with offices in the UAE caused him to miss the opportunity to register for university last year after they lost baggage carrying his academic papers.
On the first occasion, the student, who was travelling to an Asian country, said he could not find his luggage when he arrived at the airport. He said he complained to airline officials about the missing bags but the company failed to recover them.
The youth told court that a few months later he used the same airline to travel to an Arab country to register for a course at a university there. He claims the airline again lost his luggage, which contained education certificates that he needed to present to the university.
The student said that although the airline later found his bag, it was 10 days before it was returned to him and it was then too late to enrol at the university, as registration was over.
He said the situation has caused him a lot of distress. “I lost a full year without studying at the university,” the student said in court.
He demands that the airline pays him Dhs100,000 in damages and gives him a free air ticket to travel back to the country to enrol at the university. The name of the airline was not released by court officials.
Have your say: Does the airline bear the responsibility for the student not getting into university? Or should he have had a backup plan?
