Two Sudanese travellers have been caught smuggling 70 kilos of cow brains into Egypt with plans to sell them to local restaurants during Eid Al-Adha.
Authorities at Cairo International Airport apprehended the two passengers after routine customs checks on their arrival from the Sudanese capital of Khartoum on Friday.
One traveller was found to be stowing 30 kilos of cattle brain in his baggage, while the second, who flew from Nairobi via Khartoum, had 40 kilos hidden in a cardboard box.
Customs authorities say the two passengers admitted plans to sell the brains to Cairo restaurants. It was not clear if the two were working together or were independent brain-smugglers.
Importing meats or other fresh produce into Egypt is tightly vetted by customs authorities.
A veterinary doctor reportedly inspected the smuggled brains and ordered they be impounded, citing concerns over the health of the cattle from which they were extracted.
The confiscated brains will be "destroyed", according to officials.
Both travellers, now "brainless", were allowed to leave the airport.
